I was sitting cross legged in the darkened meditation hall in Northern California. It was day 6 of my first ever 10-day silent Vipassana meditation retreat, and I was experiencing a profound shift in consciousness.

The instructor had explained that there were four ‘mental aggregates’ that operated in the human psyche that were responsible for creating our perception.
This was not merely a philosophical concept, but a testable, scientific framework - a map of how we react to and integrate information.
It was the truth of the nature and structure of the universe on an underlying, invisible level.
As I sat there, breathing through the discomfort in my joints, I began to recognize this very pattern unfolding within my own consciousness. The instructor’s teaching had planted a seed that would change the way I looked at the world forever...
The Four Mental Aggregates
This information that I learned that day changed the way I looked at the world.
It opened my eyes to the fact that on a root level, the substance of our experience is purely psychological…
The four mental aggregates the instructor described are called Viññāṇa, Saññā, Vēdanā, and Sankhāra.
Each of the four functions correspond to the four elements, and these four functions operate in sequence as your psyche is processing and integrating information.
Each function is responsible for processing information in a different way:
🔥1 - The Viññāṇa corresponds with the element of fire, and is responsible for cognizing new information.
🏔️2 - The Saññā corresponds with the element of earth, and is responsible for evaluating information.
🌬️3 - The Vēdanā corresponds with the element of air, and is responsible for processing and creating a narrative about information.
🌊4 - The Sankhāra corresponds with the element of water and is responsible for summarizing and recording information, and making decisions.
These are the four functions of our psyche that process information and make sense of the world. These functions are happening in your mind, millions of times a day as you process your experience.
